Whatever Will We Do Now, Jimmy Madison?

At the Constitutional Convention, that famous progressive shin-dig of 200+ years ago, Virginia delegate George Mason, who is generally considered by history to be a righteous dude because he is "The Father of the Bill of Rights," threw up a bit of a fuss about the proposed power of the President of the USA to grant pardons at will. What if the President pardons people in his own posse who might have run afoul of the law by covering up crimes committed by him (said President) and his administration? That's not, like, in the interest of democracy, is it?

No worries, replied James Madison. Congress can impeach the president if he tries to pull that kind of shite.

I wrote a letter to Sen. Feinstein:

Dear Senator Feinstein,

Never again. If you are running against the most conservative Republican in California, I will not support your candidacy or vote for you in any capacity. Your latest vote to give Bush everything he wanted, to enable the most unpopular president in history YET AGAIN to subvert our civil liberties and the Constitution was the last straw.

I'm sure you will feed your constituents the usual rhetoric about "national security." And yet again your rhetoric will only serve Bush and the Republicans, not the Democrats and certainly not the American people.

There are Democrats and leaders of our party that I'm proud of, but increasingly you and others who continue to sell us out to this president make it harder and harder for me to support this party.

In the future, I will seek to support any Democratic challenger who runs against you in the primaries. Perhaps you're too entrenched for that to make a difference; but maybe you should consider whether or not such entrenchment puts you out of touch with your constituents.

In any case, I will do so with a clean conscience, without the tattered shreds of the Constitution on my hands. I will feel much better knowing that my vote is no longer going to a Democrat more interested in helping Bush take away even more freedom and civil liberties while accomplishing nothing to make the country any safer.

Thank you for your time.
